While browsing the newsfeed of my Facebook (FB) account, I have come across an inspiring quote. It says, “The expert in everything was once a beginner.” This quote inspires to be patient and not to rush success.

More often than not, graduating students are too excited to be in the employed and they take the on-the-job-training (OJT) for granted. They aren’t serious with it. They don’t make plans about picking the best company to render their OJT.

Because of poor planning and preparation for the OJT, most students would end up in a company they don’t like doing tasks unrelated to their college program. They haven’t seen the relationship of doing and completing internship to how it can help them shape their futures.

During my internship, I realized these 5 important things:

11.   You’ll get to experience the real office life.

OJT is designed to be really at the last part of your college life before graduation. It is like a culmination of everything students have studied. It is a venue where students could apply all their learnings.

In terms of real work experiences, OJT offers the closest to reality. Here, you should come to work on time. Snacks and lunch have time limits. There are deadlines to be met. Though you have experience those already in school, they are different in OJT since you have a boss plus if you failed to do your tasks, other aspects in your team or office would be affected.

Because of the internship program, I was able to attend several meetings and carry out different tasks. Most activities involved the following: create a candidate profile on Connex World, investigate Technology and Innovation in the Philippines, analyzed the business environment particularly the external business environment, and a lot more.

2. It will help you decide on what you really want to be in the future.

Since internship gives you a taste of the world you might be in in the future, it may help you decide whether you’re fit in that type of business or not. OJT will give you a few months of training – working in the position you have applied for. While working, you would encounter different situations you might consider in making your future decisions. It can be an encounter with a client, a presentation or a company meeting, the normal work routine, the difficulties you encountered, or the officemates you have.

One time, during my internship in New Zealand, I faced problems while creating a profile on Connex World. It was challenging for me to create a profile that highlights the skills and strengths I could offer to a company I see that I am deem fit. As a remedy to my problem, I consulted our Business Development Advisor, Gurvir Kaur. She walked me through the process of creating a strong profile. This led me to a better understanding of my professional and career aspirations.

13. It is a learning opportunity.

Being in an internship program made me realized that I still do not know a lot of things. Though I have completed my academic requirements, still you’ll feel a little unprepared when you’re already part of the work force.

Inside the classroom, I have learned a lot of business models, theories, and different strategies. Because of the internship, I have experienced the application of the strategy in a business. There was a point when I realized the important of having a business strategy. For a business to succeed, there should be a clear strategy for everyone to understand and follow towards achieving the success that the company envisions.

44. You’ll have the chance to make friends with professionals.

I have attended different official events and every time, I was always with a colleague and the CEO, Peter Cameron. Those events are meaningful to me because I they let me attend official functions alongside with them. Also, the CEO and the managers of the company are cool people. They are not that intimidating plus they allow people to call them by their first names. Also, whenever I was encountering problems, they always assured me that they were there to help and all I needed to do was to ask.

15.  It will give you the chance to earn money.

Internship is like hitting two birds with one stone. It is both an opportunity to grow as professional and to earn as a student. You are being trained and paid.

During my internship, my boss even explained to me some other ways on how to earn extra money. He is very approachable and the additional task he gave me is an opportunity to earn and to learn more. Not all internship programs offer monetary assistance to the interns. Actually, it shouldn’t be the driving force of the students, but if allowance is available, then it is something to be thankful for.

Students should realize the connection of OJT to their future career. Where in a period of time where a lot of people are skilled and competent and having a good performance during OJT is very important especially now that there’s a tight competition towards job seekers. Also, endure the difficulties you’d experience in your internship. Challenges are there to lead us to be the better version of ourselves. So we must seize every opportunity and learn from it.
